Working Group: Bear Markets & Real Grizzly Bears: Some things to be Worried About
Speaker: Peter Philips
Peter Philips is a Professor of Economics at the University of Utah and he also volunteers in the summer as a back country ranger in the Grand Tetons National Park. He is passionate about both assignments - and we will hear about both. His primary focus is as a labor economist specializing on the construction labor market. His session will focus on the role of collective bargaining in the US economy, where we are in the current construction cycle and when the next downturn will occur.
Philips recent graduate students have done their theses on prevailing wage laws in construction and health insurance and labor turnover in construction. He has also done major work on the safety prequalification of contractors working on refinery and chemical sites as well as on the economic impact of building and operating pharmaceutical and biotech facilities in California.
Philips has testified numerous times before legislative bodies regarding various labor market regulations in the construction industry. Philips was the only economist on the National Academies committee of experts evaluating the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) construction safety research program.
Philips is married to Jean Reagan, a children's book author. They have a grown daughter, Jane. Philips' son, John, died of a heroin overdose in 2005. Jean spends the summers with Philips in the back country of the Grand Teton National Park. If her name sounds familiar, you probably already know that she is speaking to the Academy spouses and guests on Friday morning.
